Devastating floods on the Nepal-Tibet border region this week have killed at least 547 people, Nepal’s police said Friday. Chinese state media earlier confirmed five dead following Wednesday’s disaster, taking the total killed to at least 552.
Disaster Impact and Scale
- More than 1,400 people are currently missing, including hundreds of foreign nationals.
- The US Geological Survey identified the cause as a glacial collapse that triggered a vast flow of icy debris, marking the deadliest disaster for Nepal since the 2015 earthquake.
- Indian authorities recovered seven additional bodies from rivers flowing from Nepal on Friday, though these victims are not included in the official 552 death toll.
Authorities are continuing efforts to identify the recovered bodies as search operations remain ongoing.
