Dubai Police have confiscated 13,657 electric scooters during an eight-month enforcement drive aimed at curbing traffic violations. The ongoing campaign seeks to address non-compliance with local regulations, with authorities emphasizing that legal action is necessary to prevent accidents, severe injuries, and fatalities on the emirate’s roads.
Brigadier Juma Salem Bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, stated that field teams are maintaining a zero-tolerance policy toward dangerous riding habits. A primary concern for officials is the operation of scooters on roads where speed limits exceed 60 km/h, despite the presence of designated, safer paths throughout the city.
The enforcement teams are actively monitoring for several high-risk behaviors, including riding against the flow of traffic, using sidewalks, navigating through commercial markets or narrow alleys, and crossing roads in hazardous ways. Officials also highlighted the dangers of weaving between lanes across road dividers and operating in unauthorized zones, noting that these actions pose significant threats to both the riders and other road users.
To ensure compliance, Brigadier Bin Suwaidan reiterated the mandatory safety standards for all riders. These requirements include wearing a certified helmet and a reflective vest, as well as strictly following all traffic signals and police directives. Scooters must be equipped with functional brakes, a white front light with a reflector, and a red rear light with a reflector to be considered road-legal.
The department has urged all scooter users to act with greater responsibility, emphasizing that adhering to speed limits and designated paths is a fundamental obligation. According to the police, following these laws is essential for maintaining public safety and security, and riders must prioritize these measures to protect their own lives and the lives of those around them.
