Kerala has launched an innovative tourism initiative titled “Be a Malayali for a Day,” designed to transform international visitors from passive observers into active participants in the state’s cultural landscape. Tourism Minister PC Vishnunadh explained that the program marks a strategic shift from the conventional “Come to see Kerala” approach to a more immersive “Come to experience Kerala” model. The goal is to foster a deeper connection between travelers and the everyday traditions of the Malayali people.
Under this new framework, tourists will be encouraged to engage directly with local communities. Activities include hands-on experiences such as crafting an Athapookalam—the traditional floral carpet integral to the Onam festival—and learning to prepare authentic regional meals. Furthermore, the initiative provides opportunities for visitors to explore various heritage art forms through direct instruction from skilled artists who have dedicated years to mastering their crafts.
Minister Vishnunadh outlined a strategic plan that tasks each district in Kerala with developing its own unique cultural tourism brand. This effort aims to integrate local festivals, artistic performances, and cultural events into the global tourism calendar, thereby increasing their visibility and attracting interest throughout the year. The government is also committed to the scientific documentation and preservation of centuries-old art forms, ensuring they remain vibrant for future generations.
“Our heritage is not intended to be preserved within the confines of museums; it should be actively shared and kept vibrant for future generations,” said Vishnunadh. He emphasized that the state is utilizing modern digital platforms to make these traditions accessible and to engage younger audiences. This digital outreach, which includes the minister’s own recently released and viral Onam song, is intended to excite stakeholders and secure a sustainable future for Kerala’s cultural legacy. By moving away from mere spectatorship, the initiative seeks to ensure that the state’s rich heritage is protected, shared, and celebrated on an international stage.
