The United Arab Emirates has officially denied any involvement in the ongoing civil war in Sudan, issuing a statement on Thursday to refute allegations leveled against it by a United Nations-mandated International Fact-Finding Mission (FFM). The UAE mission to the UN emphasized that it has not provided arms or any military materiel to any party in the conflict since it began in April 2023.
In its response, the UAE highlighted its cooperation with the UN body, noting that it had engaged with the FFM in a transparent and substantive manner. The UN report itself acknowledged the oral and written submissions provided by the UAE in defense against the claims. However, the UAE stressed that such serious allegations must be grounded in an objective, impartial, and evidence-based methodology that relies on information that has been independently corroborated and verified against consistent evidentiary standards.
The UAE reiterated its full commitment to complying with the sanctions regime established by the UN Security Council, which includes all measures targeting designated individuals and entities. Furthermore, the nation reaffirmed its support for extending the arms embargo to Sudan and called for an immediate end to all forms of external military support for the warring factions.
Demonstrating its commitment to these international obligations, the UAE pointed to its own legal actions against illicit networks. In April of this year, the country concluded an investigation into a Sudanese arms smuggling ring, referring the case to the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeal for a final ruling. Attorney General Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi ordered the referral of 13 defendants and six UAE-registered companies on charges including money laundering, forgery, and the illicit trafficking of military equipment.
The investigation revealed that these companies acted as front entities to conceal transactions. The suspects involved included Sudanese politicians, former intelligence officers, and business figures linked to the Islamic Movement and the Muslim Brotherhood. Authorities determined that these illegal operations were conducted at the direct request of the Port Sudan Authority’s armament committee, chaired by Abdel Fattah Al Burhan and Yasser Al Atta, with coordination involving figures such as former National Intelligence Service director Salah Abdallah Mohammed Saleh, also known as Salah Gosh.
The FFM report noted the existence of these domestic legal frameworks that ensure accountability for private actors. Beyond the legal proceedings, the UAE condemned the violations of international human rights and humanitarian law committed by both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces.
Looking toward a resolution, the UAE has consistently advocated for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. The nation continues to press for an urgent humanitarian truce and the establishment of a comprehensive, civilian-led political process that remains independent of both the warring parties and extremist groups.
