An adult was wounded during a shooting at Westwood Hills Elementary School in Waynesboro, Virginia, on Wednesday morning. According to officials who responded to the scene, no children were harmed in the incident. Waynesboro is located approximately 96 miles (155 km) northwest of Richmond.
Jim Wood, a Waynesboro city council member whose district includes the school, described the event as isolated and confirmed the shooter is no longer a threat. “This is a one-on-one incident,” Wood stated after arriving at the scene. He later visited a local church where children were being reunited with their families. The adult victim was transported to a hospital with injuries deemed non-life-threatening.
Virginia State Police spokeswoman Robin Lawson confirmed that initial reports indicate only one adult was injured. While Waynesboro police have not yet released a full statement, Lawson noted that one is expected later today. The school system utilized social media to inform the public that police were “managing an emergency” and subsequently confirmed that all students, teachers, and staff are safe.
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger stated she is monitoring the situation. “My heart is with these young students, their parents and families, and the teachers and staff at the school,” she wrote on social media, adding her thanks to the first responders.
