The United Arab Emirates has formally expressed its solidarity with Algeria following a series of deadly wildfires that have impacted the country’s northeastern regions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) issued a statement conveying sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims and to the Algerian people, while also offering wishes for a swift recovery for those injured in the disaster.
As of Friday, Algerian authorities were engaged in a massive effort to contain 64 active wildfires spread across 10 provinces. These blazes followed a destructive wave of fire that has already claimed 12 lives and left dozens of others injured. According to the General Directorate of Civil Protection, emergency response teams successfully extinguished 110 of the 174 fires that broke out across the nation within the previous 24-hour period.
The eastern province of Jijel has been identified as the most severely affected area, currently reporting 20 active fires. Other significant hotspots include Skikda with 14 fires and El Tarf, located near the Tunisian border, with 10. Additional ongoing blazes were recorded in Guelma with six, Annaba with five, and Bejaia with four.
This recent tragedy adds to a difficult period for the region, which has faced several separate incidents, including a fatal orphanage fire that resulted in 11 deaths and a separate bus accident that claimed at least 25 lives. The UAE’s outreach reflects its ongoing commitment to international humanitarian support during times of crisis, mirroring previous expressions of solidarity regarding wildfires in France and other past emergencies in Algeria.
