The country’s former president Donald Trump is not getting immunity from the trial of the accusation of conspiracy to change the result of the 2020 US presidential election. On Tuesday local time, a court in the United States made this decision.
A three-judge panel of the appeals court rejected Trump’s immunity claim.
In a unanimous verdict, the judges said, “We cannot accept that the office of the President places those who serve there above the law for the time being.”
In this case, Trump claimed that he would be acquitted of the crime he was accused of. Because the incident happened during his tenure as president.
But on Tuesday, a three-judge panel of a federal appeals court in Washington DC rejected Trump’s argument. This verdict is a big blow for Trump. Because, for several years, he has been claiming that he will get presidential immunity in various cases.
After the ruling, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement that the former president disagrees with the court’s respect for the ruling and will appeal.
The date of commencement of proceedings in this case was fixed from March 4, 2024. But the proceedings of the case were postponed due to the question of whether Trump has immunity as a former president. Earlier this month, a panel of judges heard the case in a DC Circuit Court in Washington, DC.
