Coritiba defender Jacy Maranhão experienced a dramatic turn of events during a recent Brazilian Serie A match against Chapecoense. While celebrating what he believed was a 2-0 lead for his side during the first half, the 29-year-old accidentally tumbled into an uncovered opening leading to the players’ tunnel.
The incident left spectators stunned and forced the defender to deal with the immediate physical consequences of the fall. To make matters worse, the celebration was ultimately in vain; after a review, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ruled that Maranhão had been in an offside position, resulting in the goal being disallowed.
Although he attempted to continue playing after the fall, the injury sustained during the tumble eventually forced him to be substituted during the second half of the match. The location of the accident, at the Estádio Major Antônio Couto Pereira, has a history of such mishaps.
Nearly a decade ago, Cameroonian striker Diederrick Joel Tagueu-Tadjo suffered an almost identical fall at the same end of the stadium while celebrating a goal. Unlike Maranhão, Joel’s goal was allowed to stand, and he was able to finish his match against São Paulo.
Brazilian journalist Leonardo Mendes Jr. later highlighted a strange coincidence regarding the two events. Sharing his thoughts on social media, he noted, “There’s one detail that makes it even more unbelievable. Jacy repeats the jump in Joel’s tunnel: the security guard who tries to prevent the jump IS THE SAME ONE!”
