Filipina tennis sensation Alexandra Eala is set to reunite with seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams at the National Bank Open in Toronto. The duo, who received the tournament’s final wild-card entry, will make their debut as a pair during Thursday night’s session at Sobeys Stadium.
Eala enters the competition following a career-defining performance at the Mubadala DC Open in Washington. During that tournament, the 21-year-old defeated three seeded opponents, including world No. 3 Jessica Pegula in the final, to become the first Filipina to secure a WTA 500 singles title. This achievement also propelled Eala into the WTA Top 20 for the first time in her career.
Reflecting on the upcoming partnership, Eala expressed her enthusiasm about sharing the court with the American icon. “I’m really, really excited to be playing doubles with her again,” Eala told reporters. “Every opportunity I get to share the court with her is super cherished. She’s got a great mentality, and there’s so much I can learn from her.” She added that she looks forward to the atmosphere, noting the support from both the Filipino community and Williams’ own fanbase.
Tournament director Karl Hale highlighted the significance of the pairing, stating, “We know our fans will be incredibly excited to see Venus and Alexandra team up in doubles. The two players had originally intended to compete together at the Mubadala DC Open last week, but Eala ultimately withdrew from the doubles event to focus entirely on her singles campaign. The decision proved successful, allowing her to capture the biggest trophy of her professional career to date.
Prior to her victory in Washington, Eala explained her decision to prioritize singles play, emphasizing her deep respect for her partner. “I am so grateful for every opportunity that I have to be around her, to learn from her, to hit with her,” Eala said. “But I do think this is my first week coming back, and Venus is someone who deserves a partner who can give their all physically, emotionally and mentally when they’re on court with her. Right now, I think I can only do that for singles.”
Venus Williams has also spoken positively about their collaboration. “We had a great start,” Williams remarked regarding their earlier interactions this season. “We played really well. Hoping to get a chance to play with her again. I think as a team, if we had a chance to play often, then I think we could play really well.”
Eala’s recent momentum has drawn widespread attention, including recognition from high-profile figures. Rafael Nadal recently congratulated the young star on her historic triumph, while the Philippine Embassy in the UAE and former boxing champion Manny Pacquiao have also publicly praised her performance.
