Countries participating in the UN COP-28 climate conference in Dubai have agreed to start reducing the use of fossil fuels. This is the first agreement of its kind to avoid the severe effects of climate change. This agreement signals the final end of the fossil fuel era.
Scientists say that the last best way to avoid climate catastrophe is to end the use of fossil fuels.
The nearly 200 participating countries reached agreement on the final agreement after two weeks of extensive debate and discussion. Then on Wednesday they signed an agreement for this purpose.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Aida said, ‘This is the first time the world has united around a clear proposal on the need to move away from fossil fuels. This was becoming an obvious problem. In the end we managed to deal with it.’
The proposed agreement would specifically call for a “proper, orderly and equitable transition away from fossil fuels in the energy system” so as to “achieve the goal of zero emissions by 2050 on a science-led path”.
The proposed deal also calls for tripling the world’s renewable energy capacity by 2030.
