Luigi Mangione, 28, formally admitted in court on Friday to the killing of UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson, entering a guilty plea to federal charges of stalking the victim with the intent to cause death. US District Judge Margaret Garnett has scheduled the sentencing for December 18. This development effectively cancels a federal trial for the case, which gained significant public attention following the December 4, 2024, shooting outside a Manhattan hotel during an investor conference.
The legal landscape surrounding the case remains complex. Mangione had previously entered not guilty pleas in April 2025 to federal murder, weapons, and stalking counts. However, Judge Garnett dismissed the murder and weapons charges in January 2026 due to legal technicalities, removing the possibility of a federal death penalty. While he still faces a potential life sentence for the stalking conviction, the resolution of the federal matter may allow his defense team to petition for the dismissal of separate state-level murder charges under New York’s double jeopardy law, which prohibits dual prosecution for the same conduct.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who brought the state case against Mangione in December 2024, has indicated his office will contest any such dismissal, maintaining that the murder charge is legally distinct from the federal stalking counts. If a dismissal is sought, the losing party is expected to pursue an emergency appeal. Currently, the state trial is set for September 8 before Justice Gregory Carro, where Mangione faces charges including terrorism, murder, weapons possession, and forgery. The terrorism-related counts were previously dismissed by a judge in September 2025.
The killing of Brian Thompson, who oversaw UnitedHealth Group’s insurance division, sparked widespread public discourse regarding health insurance industry practices. The incident, captured in graphic footage that circulated widely online, triggered a five-day manhunt that concluded with Mangione’s arrest in Pennsylvania. As the legal process moves toward its conclusion, the intersection of federal and state proceedings continues to be a focal point of the litigation.
