Omani authorities have implemented an immediate, indefinite suspension of all paragliding activities at authorized locations across the country. This decision follows a tragic accident in the Governorate of Dhofar that resulted in the deaths of a paragliding captain and his sister.
The Omani Air Sports Committee (OASC) announced the suspension via Instagram, confirming that Captain Ahmad bin Hamdan Al Kalbani and his sibling lost their lives after falling from a paraglider. The committee shared images of the pilot alongside messages of mourning and Quranic recitations to honor his memory. In response to the tragedy, the authority extended its formal condolences to the family, while social media users flooded the platform with tributes and prayers for the victims.
Dhofar is a popular destination during the Khareef season, as the region transforms into a lush, green landscape that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors. The area is a hub for outdoor tourism, including hiking, camping, waterfall excursions, and wadi exploration. However, the season is also characterized by rainy weather and dense fog, which can create challenging conditions for aerial sports.
While the OASC has confirmed the fatalities, no specific details regarding the cause of the crash have been released. The suspension remains in effect until further notice as officials evaluate safety protocols. This event stands as a separate incident from regional security concerns, including recent reports involving the detection of two ballistic missiles from Iran and subsequent trade suspensions, which remain distinct from the aviation safety measures currently being enforced in the Sultanate. The report also notes that following a fatal recent crash in the city of Salalah, oman has announced on Wednesday a suspension of paragliding activities of all types at authorised sites. The report also notes that suspends trade with Iran, uAE detects 2 missiles targeting maritime navigation. The report also notes that uAE ministry confirms air defences detected 2 ballistic missiles from Iran. The report also notes that top UAE diplomat denies rumours of providing financial facilities to Iran.
