A 38-year-old woman, identified as Sharmila Pravin Jagtap, has been arrested in Baramati, Maharashtra, following allegations that she attempted to murder her husband. The arrest occurred on Wednesday after the suspect’s 71-year-old father-in-law, Prakash Jagtap, filed a formal complaint with the local police.
According to Assistant Police Inspector Shashikant Ingawale, who is leading the investigation, the incident occurred between July 30 and August 1. Investigators allege that Sharmila first poisoned her husband, Pravin, before striking him with a bat until he lost consciousness. She then placed him inside a rectangular duct at their residence, initially covering him with a cloth.
The situation escalated when the suspect attempted to further conceal the victim by placing a stone slab over the duct. Unable to manage the heavy stone alone, she hired workers to assist with the task. On August 1, these workers became suspicious after noticing movement coming from inside the structure. Upon inspecting the duct, they discovered the victim was still alive and immediately contacted emergency services via the 112 helpline.
Police units arrived at the home shortly after the call, successfully rescuing Pravin and transporting him to a hospital for urgent medical care. He is currently reported to be in stable condition. Authorities believe the violent episode originated from a domestic dispute; the couple’s two children were reportedly away from the house at the time of the attack.
Although the family was initially hesitant to involve law enforcement, they eventually proceeded with the complaint. Consequently, police have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, with charges including attempted murder. Sharmila is expected to appear before a court, where investigators will request her custody to continue their inquiries into the incident.
The workers then alerted police through the emergency Dial 112 service.
However, unable to complete the work herself, she allegedly called workers to the house.
