A surge in cross-border hostilities has left at least nine people dead in Russia and three in Ukraine, according to regional officials. The violence, occurring as the conflict enters its fifth year, shows no signs of abating as both sides continue to exchange heavy fire.
In Russia’s southern Krasnodar region, Governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported that six individuals were killed and 40 others injured on Monday. The casualties were caused by falling debris following a Ukrainian drone strike on the Black Sea resort city of Gelendzhik. Earlier that day, Sergei Aksyonov, the Moscow-installed governor of Russian-occupied Crimea, confirmed that a separate Ukrainian strike resulted in three deaths and two injuries.
Ukrainian officials reported similar losses, with Governor Oleksandr Hanzha stating that a Russian attack on a gas station in the Dnipropetrovsk region killed at least three people. The strike ignited a fire that damaged the facility and several nearby vehicles. Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed that its forces have successfully captured the settlements of Bilyi Kolodiaz and Uspenivka in the eastern Kharkiv region.
The conflict has also expanded to target Russian infrastructure, including a recent drone strike on a warehouse belonging to the e-commerce giant Wildberries in the Vladimir region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has publicly accused the company of supporting Russia’s war effort. According to Al Jazeera’s Audrey MacAlpine, independent investigations suggest Wildberries facilitates the sale of dual-use items, such as bulletproof vests, military helmets, and fiber optic cables utilized in drone technology.
Diplomatic efforts remain complex as President Zelenskyy seeks to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses. Following a recent meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House, which Zelenskyy described as productive, discussions continued with Vice President JD Vance on Friday. Despite these talks, reports indicate that the Trump administration may be backtracking on a prior commitment to grant Ukraine a license for the domestic production of Patriot interceptor missiles.
