The German government has formally accused Russia of orchestrating an attempted drone attack on the Leipzig/Halle Airport last month. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced on Tuesday that the incident, which involved an explosive-laden drone, aligns with a documented pattern of “Russian hybrid operations.” According to investigators, there is clear evidence that the individuals operating the drone were acting on “behalf of Russian state entities.”
The drone was discovered and successfully defused on the evening of August 4 near a Ukrainian cargo plane stationed at the facility. Minister Dobrindt emphasized that this was not an isolated event, but rather part of a broader, ongoing campaign of sabotage and intimidation across Europe. Standing alongside Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, Dobrindt stated that police investigations, intelligence findings, and the specific nature of the offense confirm Russian responsibility for the attempt.
In response to the discovery, Germany is initiating a series of retaliatory measures. Foreign Minister Wadephul confirmed that the Russian ambassador has been summoned, and the government plans to close the Russian consulate general in Bonn as well as the Russian House cultural centre in Berlin. Furthermore, Germany intends to leverage the European Union framework to push for additional sanctions, travel restrictions on Russian nationals, and increased pressure on Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet.”
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through spokesperson Maria Zakharova, dismissed the accusations as “anti-Russian action” and warned that Moscow would issue a formal response. This development marks a significant escalation in tensions, reflecting a more assertive stance from Berlin since Chancellor Friedrich Merz took office, which has included increased military support for Ukraine and authorization for the use of long-range weaponry against Russian targets.
International leaders have moved quickly to support Germany’s position. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte welcomed the planned measures, stating that the evidence of Russian involvement is clear and that such attempts to undermine unity will fail. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed this sentiment, noting that the bloc is prepared to coordinate further sanctions during the upcoming meeting of EU foreign ministers in the Republic of Ireland.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot stated that if the severity of the incident is fully confirmed, there will be inevitable consequences for Russia, while UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed the United Kingdom’s “full solidarity” with Germany. This incident follows a broader trend of rising suspicion regarding Russian espionage and sabotage, particularly as Ukraine continues to successfully target Russian infrastructure with its own drone operations.
Leipzig/Halle Airport serves as a critical logistics hub, frequently hosting Ukrainian Antonov transport aircraft and supporting NATO’s Strategic Airlift International Solution (SALIS). The facility is essential for delivering equipment to NATO battle groups along the alliance’s eastern flank. The accusation follows a series of recent security concerns, including a July EU sanctions package targeting Russian cyber-espionage and a separate “terror” investigation launched by Poland regarding a fire at a factory that supplied drone components to Ukraine.
