Hospitals in Gaza have been badly damaged in more than a month of fighting. Meanwhile, almost all the hospitals in the valley have stopped functioning. Local doctors are trying hard to save the premature newborns born in such a situation. It is reported that the hospital’s incubators have been shut down due to lack of electricity, and newborns are being wrapped in foil paper and kept next to hot water.
Newborns born prematurely are kept in incubators, which require electricity to run. But hospitals’ generators have been shut down as fuel is not allowed into powerless Gaza. As a result, it is not possible to supply electricity to the incubator.
Gaza’s al-Shifa hospital has been a key target for Israel since the start of the war. Israeli forces have taken control of the surrounding streets.
The hospital has already run out of fuel. In this, the treatment program of the largest hospital of the valley has been closed, including the intensive care unit, children’s department, oxygen devices. A total of six premature newborns died at the hospital till Monday (November 13).
In such situations, health workers are struggling to keep the immature newborns alive. As the electricity and oxygen supplies ran out, they were removed from the incubator, wrapped in foil paper and placed next to warm water. CNN published a photo of Al-Shifa Hospital. It showed several of the newborns were kept together in beds, with those in incubators.
In this regard, the director of the hospital, Mohammad Abu Salmiya, said that the immature newborns were taken out of the incubator, wrapped in foil paper and placed next to hot water. to keep them warm.
Director Abu Salmiya also said that due to lack of electricity, none of the operating rooms inside the hospital are working. Those who need surgery are dying. We can’t do anything.
A freelance journalist stationed inside al-Shifa said dozens of bodies have yet to be buried. Ambulances are unable to pick up the injured and life support systems are not working due to lack of electricity. Doctors are working by lighting candles.
