A violent incident occurred at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, located in the Bang Kruai district of Nonthaburi province, on Friday morning. According to Thai national police spokesperson Trairong Phiwphan, the shooting resulted in seven fatalities, including the perpetrator, and left 15 individuals injured. Authorities have identified the gunman as a student at the school, who subsequently took his own life.
The attack began at approximately 10:00 am, prompting an immediate emergency response. Nonthaburi Provincial Police Commander Lt. Col. Dechrapee Kongdee confirmed that the suspect died by suicide following the event. Images from the scene showed students evacuating the campus on the northwestern outskirts of Bangkok as medical teams arrived to treat the wounded, with some victims being transported to ambulances on stretchers.
Reflecting on the chaos, an 18-year-old student described the initial moments of the attack. “I didn’t think it was a gun at first,” he said, noting that he initially mistook the sounds for firecrackers or someone banging on an object. “There were many shots: bang bang bang. Then it went quiet. Then it started again.”
Debsirin Nonthaburi School, which serves a significant population, reported an enrollment of approximately 3,100 students and 147 teachers for the 2025 academic year. This tragedy follows a series of high-profile security incidents in Thailand over recent years. Earlier this year, on February 11, an 18-year-old was detained after allegedly opening fire and holding students and teachers hostage at Patongprathankiriwat School in Songkhla province.
Public safety concerns have been heightened by several other violent events in the country. In 2023, a 14-year-old boy killed two people and wounded five others during a shooting at a luxury shopping mall in central Bangkok. Additionally, five people lost their lives in a separate shooting incident at a Bangkok food market last year.
One 18-year-old student told Reuters he initially thought there were firecrackers going off or someone banging an object.
