Even if there is no war and conflict, the number of Bangladeshi political asylum seekers in European countries is increasing every year. Along with countries like Syria-Afghanistan, Bangladesh now tops the list of asylum seekers. The European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA), Europe’s political asylum agency, says Syria is at the top of the list. The position of Bangladesh is sixth.
More than 40 thousand Bangladeshis have applied to European countries in 2023 complaining against the country. Compared to 2015, which is more than double. In other words, an average of 111 Bangladeshis have made this application every day. In some years, this number has decreased slightly, but it has been increasing since 2021.
Italy is the first choice of Bangladeshis for political asylum. Last year, more than 23 thousand Bangladeshis applied for asylum in the country. Next is France.
The surprising thing is that many Bangladeshis have applied to Romania this time. In 2023, a total of 10,132 political asylum applications were received in this country. A large part of them are Bangladeshis. Even in countries like Slovenia and Malta, Bangladeshis have the second highest number of applications.
The European Union reports that the rate of political asylum applications has increased due to the increase in conflicts around the world. However, most of the applications from Bangladeshis for political asylum are rejected.
