Five US Marines have been killed in a helicopter crash in California. The helicopter carrying them went missing on Tuesday. The Marine Corps confirmed their deaths on Thursday (February 8).
The U.S. military said the soldiers were traveling in a CH-53E Super Stallon helicopter from Nevada Creek Air Force Base to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. The helicopter crashed on the way.
“It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that we announce the loss of five members of our 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and ‘Flying Tiger’ while training,” said Maj. Gen. Michael Borgskachal, commander of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, in a statement.
The bodies of the dead soldiers have not yet been recovered. However, all efforts are being made to rescue them.
President Joe Biden said he was “shocked” after hearing the news of the soldiers’ deaths. “My deepest condolences go out to their families, the squadron and the Marine Corps,” he said in the statement. We are saddened by the loss of five of our best fighters.”
On the other hand, two helicopters collided in mid-air in a remote area while returning from training in April. Three people were killed and two others were injured in that accident.
