The Emirate of Sharjah is currently undertaking a comprehensive modernization of its road network and public transportation systems to streamline daily commutes for residents. This multi-faceted initiative integrates significant infrastructure construction, advanced traffic management solutions, the expansion of electric bus fleets, and the implementation of AI-driven safety technologies.
A centerpiece of this development is the Al Taawun Square Tunnel, which is being constructed to improve connectivity between Sharjah and Dubai. Designed to accommodate three lanes in each direction, the tunnel will have the capacity to handle up to 4,000 vehicles per hour during peak periods. Officials expect the project to significantly alleviate traffic congestion and reduce waiting times by as much as 85%. The first phase of the tunnel is scheduled to open in November 2026, with the entire project slated for completion by February 2027.
Simultaneously, the Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Road and Mleiha Road intersection is undergoing a major upgrade. This project features the construction of a 500-meter-long, three-lane overpass and approximately 2.5 kilometers of surface roads, with a total budget of Dhs140 million. Once finished, the improvement is projected to cut travel times from Sharjah city toward Mleiha Road from 20 minutes down to nearly 10 minutes.
To enhance pedestrian safety and traffic flow, the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) is also installing new pedestrian crossings and three-way traffic lights at critical locations, including areas near the Sharjah Ladies Club and the Supreme Council for Family Affairs. Furthermore, the authority has been utilizing asphalt recycling technology since 2021. This sustainable approach allows for the reuse of existing road materials, which has accelerated project timelines, reduced the consumption of natural resources, and improved overall maintenance efficiency.
Dr. Engineer Yousif Khamis Mohammad Alathmane, Chairman of the SRTA, noted that these efforts align with the vision of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to prioritize human development and urban growth. The authority’s strategy includes a transition toward sustainable transport, with a concerted effort to integrate natural gas, hybrid, and electric vehicles into the public fleet between 2017 and 2025, in collaboration with local taxi operators.
The electric bus initiative has seen substantial growth, expanding from an initial two buses to the addition of 10 new units in 2024 alone. The current fleet includes 41 luxury tourist and semi-tourist buses that meet Euro 6 emissions standards, balancing fuel efficiency with reduced noise and emissions. The electric lineup features 18 buses measuring 9 meters in length, each capable of carrying 33 passengers with a range of 200 to 250 kilometers per charge. Additionally, the system incorporates a 12-meter-long electric bus with a 51-passenger capacity and a range of up to 350 kilometers, alongside a specialized VIP tourist bus equipped with a meeting table.
Public transport is also shifting from fixed routes to a more flexible model through the “Bus on Demand” project. Available daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, this service allows users to book rides via a mobile app for door-to-door or designated pick-up service in areas such as Muwaileh Commercial, Aljada, University City, Al Juraina, Al Qarain, and Al Nouf. These buses are equipped with artificial intelligence and safety systems to ensure accessibility for people with disabilities.
Safety remains a priority through the deployment of smart technology across the fleet. A total of 131 intercity buses have been outfitted with 10 cameras each—four external and six internal—to monitor road conditions and the surrounding environment. Similarly, the taxi fleet has been equipped with a five-camera system that uses artificial intelligence to supervise driver behavior, track passenger counts, detect accidents, and identify items left behind by commuters.
Infrastructure enhancements also extend to specific local areas, such as the installation of two U-turns with a storage lane between Al Juraina 1 and the University Hospital, as well as a new opening beneath the Sheikh Humaid bin Saqr Al Qasimi Bridge. These combined efforts reflect Sharjah’s commitment to building a modern, sustainable, and efficient transportation ecosystem.
