A tragic road accident in central Zimbabwe has resulted in the deaths of at least 27 people. The incident occurred on Friday evening when a minibus transporting churchgoers collided head-on with a haulage truck near Chivhu, a town located approximately 140 kilometres south of the capital, Harare.
Police confirmed the collision took place at roughly 1830 GMT. According to preliminary reports, the foreign-registered truck was attempting to overtake another vehicle when it struck the minibus, which was en route to a religious conference. While the exact number of passengers in both vehicles remains unconfirmed, authorities stated that seven individuals sustained injuries in the crash.
Footage broadcast by ZBC showed the severe aftermath of the collision, featuring the charred remains of the minibus and the truck positioned on the opposite side of the road. The accident occurred on a remote, flat stretch of highway surrounded by open terrain.
This incident follows a series of recent transport-related tragedies in the region. Other notable recent accidents include a collision in Egypt that left nine people dead, a separate incident on an Egyptian road resulting in 24 injuries, and a truck crash in Suez that killed three and injured 12. Additionally, a runaway truck incident was recently recorded in Abha. The report also notes that about 140 kilometres (87 miles) south of the capital Harare, police said, the crash occurred at around 1830 GMT on Friday near Chivhu.
