Heavy rainfall and intense thunderstorms swept across the Delhi-NCR region on Monday, causing significant disruptions to air travel. More than a dozen flights scheduled to arrive at or depart from Delhi Airport were forced to reroute as the severe weather conditions compromised normal operations.
Major carriers, including IndiGo, Air India, Akasa Air, and SpiceJet, utilized social media platform X to inform passengers that flight schedules were being impacted by the adverse weather. IndiGo stated that it is closely monitoring the situation to ensure passenger safety, while advising travelers to account for potential traffic delays on the ground and to verify their real-time flight status before heading to the airport.
Air India echoed these concerns, cautioning that weather-related volatility would likely affect arrivals and departures throughout the day. Similarly, Akasa Air acknowledged that the severe conditions had disrupted its network, noting that while the situation remained beyond its control, ground teams were working to assist affected passengers. SpiceJet also warned that both connecting flights and scheduled arrivals and departures could face significant delays.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued active weather alerts for the capital, forecasting continued heavy rainfall, lightning, and strong, gusty winds. In response to the ongoing instability, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) released specific travel guidelines for the public. The authority emphasized the importance of staying informed about local weather conditions at both departure and arrival cities to manage travel expectations.
Furthermore, the AAI urged passengers to arrive at the airport well in advance of their scheduled departure times. This precaution is intended to mitigate the impact of heavy rain on road traffic, which could otherwise lead to missed flights. As the weather system continues to move through the region, airlines and aviation officials remain on high alert, prioritizing safety while attempting to normalize flight schedules as conditions permit.
