At least 59 people have been death in Vietnam by Super Typhoon Yagi so far. Besides, several hundred people were injured. the strong cyclone hit the northern part of the country.
It is said to be the strongest cyclone to hit this year.
Landslides have occurred in various places due to the impact of this powerful cyclone. On Monday (September 9), the country’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said at least 44 people were killed in the landslide. The cyclone lashed China and the Philippines before hitting Vietnam.
Earlier on Saturday, Super Typhoon Yagi hit Vietnam. The storm has now moved westward. Local authorities have warned of floods and landslides in various places. Four members of the same family were killed when a mountain collapsed on a house in Hoa Binh province on Sunday local time. VNExpress quoted local authorities as saying that the landslide occurred around midnight after several hours of continuous rain under the influence of Yagi.
It is reported that a house collapsed during the cyclone. A 51-year-old man luckily survived the accident. However, his wife, daughter and two grandsons were killed. Their bodies have been recovered.
Earlier, Typhoon Yagi hit China’s Hainan with heavy rain and strong winds. At least two people were killed and 92 others were injured. Meanwhile, on Sunday (September 8) at noon, 17 people were buried in a landslide in the Sa Pa area of the northern Lao province of Vietnam. Six of them died. The remaining nine were injured. The dead included a 68-year-old woman, a one-year-old child and a newborn. Their bodies have been recovered.
The yagi produced wind gusts of over 230 kilometers per hour (143 mph). Besides, trees were uprooted in various places and more than 450,000 people of the island were evacuated to safety. Four people were killed in the northern province of Quang Nih and another in the city of Hai Duong, near Hanoi, state media reported.
At least 23 boats were damaged or sunk at Hai Au Boat Lock on Tuan Chau Island, local residents said. Typhoon Yagi killed at least 24 people and injured several others in China and the Philippines before hitting Vietnam.
About 50,000 people have been evacuated from coastal cities in Vietnam. People have been warned to stay at home during this time. All schools in 12 northern provinces, including Hanoi, have been temporarily closed.
