At least 155 people have been death in floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in the East African country of Tanzania over the past few weeks.
236 people were injured. More than 2 lakh people have been affected.
The country’s prime minister Majaliwa told parliament on Thursday (April 25) that “heavy rains, winds and severe flooding and landslides caused significant damage in various parts of the country,” a naturally occurring climate pattern that typically accompanies rising global temperatures It also brings heavy rainfall.
Prime Minister Majaliwa warned low-lying residents to evacuate to higher ground and urged local officials to ensure essential services for those whose homes were washed away. The country’s prime minister also said that more than 51,000 families have been affected by the rain.
Meanwhile, heavy rains in the East African region also led to reports of flooding in neighboring Burundi and Kenya.
