Rahmat Shah delivered a masterful unbeaten 143 to lead Afghanistan to a comprehensive 4-0 ODI series victory over Ireland. Saturday’s win in Belfast concluded a dominant campaign, following an opening match washout.
Ireland initially appeared poised for a consolation victory after Curtis Campher’s aggressive 96 propelled them to a competitive total of 298-7. The hosts strengthened their position when Liam McCarthy claimed 3-47, dismissing openers Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz early in the chase, leaving Afghanistan struggling at 22-2 within six overs.
However, Rahmat Shah and Sediqullah Atal orchestrated a remarkable recovery. The pair combined for a 201-run partnership, marking a new third-wicket record for Afghanistan in all ODI cricket. This performance surpassed the 184-run stand shared by Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi against Ireland in Abu Dhabi in 2021.
The duo rebuilt the innings methodically before accelerating against leg-spinner Gavin Hoey, who conceded 73 runs in 10 wicketless overs. Shah reached his century off 109 balls, featuring nine fours and a six. Atal, aiming for consecutive centuries, was eventually dismissed after a brilliant catch by Cade Carmichael while attempting a pull shot off McCarthy.
With 76 runs required from the final nine overs, Azmatullah Omarzai provided a crucial cameo of 24 to help steer the side home. Afghanistan successfully chased the 299-run target with seven balls to spare, cementing their momentum ahead of a three-match T20 series against India in September.
This series victory serves as a significant milestone for Afghanistan, who have already secured their qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The team’s recent form, bolstered by the return of their pace duo for this tour, highlights their growing consistency on the international stage.
Shah, who finished on 143 not out, added 201 runs with Atal after Afghanistan slumped to 22-2 inside six overs, with Liam McCarthy removing both openers.
