The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally denied allegations from Tehran that it is holding three Iranian pilots in secret detention. The claim follows the downing of Iranian aircraft during regional hostilities earlier this year, an event that has further strained diplomatic relations.
A spokesperson for the ministry expressed surprise on Saturday regarding the “misleading statements” issued by Iranian officials. Doha reaffirmed that Qatari forces are not holding any surviving aircrew members, categorizing the reports as entirely unfounded. Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari stated on X that Qatar categorically denies these claims, particularly as they emerge during ongoing diplomatic efforts intended to de-escalate regional tensions.
The controversy stems from a letter sent by General Mohammad Bagherzadeh of the Iranian armed forces to the International Committee of the Red Cross. According to Iran’s Fars news agency, the letter identified three pilots—Javad Salehi, Abdolmajid Dashtian, and Omran Behraveshian—alleging they were captured alive following the crash of their Su-24 warplanes in March. Bagherzadeh claimed the men have been held incommunicado for six months without access to their families or diplomatic representation.
While Iran previously acknowledged that one pilot died and others went missing during the March mission, the specific claims regarding the capture of these three individuals had not been publicized until now. Doha maintains that its air defense forces engaged the aircraft only after they breached Qatari airspace and failed to respond to multiple warnings.
Following the engagement, search and rescue operations led to the recovery of the remains of a pilot identified as Majid Kazemi. Al-Ansari explained that Qatar coordinated with Iranian authorities to hand over these remains in accordance with international humanitarian law. He added that Qatar had invited an Iranian team to visit in April to review the details of the search and rescue mission, but the invitation remains unanswered.
The military incident occurred during an attack on the Al Udeid airbase, which serves as the largest United States military installation in the region and hosts personnel from US Central Command. In early March, the Qatari Defence Ministry reported the downing of two Iranian Sukhoi Su-24 bombers, marking the first time a Gulf nation had reported such an action during the current conflict.
These events unfolded amidst a broader wave of retaliatory strikes that began on February 28. Although a ceasefire brokered by Pakistan provided a brief respite in April, peace framework negotiations collapsed in June, leading to renewed sporadic clashes and threats to maritime traffic near the Strait of Hormuz.
Diplomatic pressure is mounting as a 60-day negotiating window, established under a mid-June memorandum of understanding, is set to expire this Monday. With minimal progress in direct talks, transit through the Strait of Hormuz has slowed significantly.
Tensions were further exacerbated on Friday when US President Donald Trump, speaking in New York, described Iran as being “very badly defeated” and suggested he might soon declare the Strait of Hormuz to be United States territory. Tehran rejected these comments on Saturday, with Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stating on X that the waterway cannot be seized via social media or aircraft carriers, warning that Iran would maintain its blockade until Washington acknowledges the “reality of defeat.”
The interception came amid the broader wave of retaliatory strikes across the Gulf following the outbreak of hostilities on February 28.
His statement followed public demands from Tehran seeking the release of the aviators.
Despite this dispute, Qatar remains actively engaged as a key mediator and is pushing for a negotiated settlement between Iran and the US.
The diplomatic friction comes as broader peace efforts face difficulties ahead of a key deadline.
