Lionel Messi has won the 2023 FIFA ‘The Best’ award, beating Manchester City star Arling Haaland and France’s World Cup-winning star Kylian Mbappe. The 36-year-old forward was recognized as the FIFA Footballer of the Year for the second time in a row and for the eighth time overall.
Messi was announced as the winner at ‘The Best FIFA Football Awards’ in London on Monday (January 15) night. The award is given by FIFA in recognition of football performance from December 16, the day after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, to August 20, 2023. The best Messi in the eyes of the fans won this award.
However, he could not go to take the award with his own hands. Instead, the award was accepted by the presenter and French legend Thierry Henry. Basically the results of the voting show that Haaland and his two scoring points equal 48. So it could not be said for sure who will get the best award. So maybe Messi did not come to the event.
However, Messi was slightly ahead in the first choice list of national team captains. That’s why the Inter Miami star won the award. And Mbappe finished with 35 points.
He left PSG last July and joined Major League Soccer team Inter Miami. There he made an impression by scoring goal after goal, scoring 10 goals in 7 matches for the team. Messi became the most successful player in football history with 44 trophies after winning the League Cup for the team.
On the other hand, Santana de Moraes has received the biggest recognition for making a lot of contributions to the success of Manchester City. The 31-year-old Brazilian footballer beat Morocco’s Yassine Bono and Belgium’s Thibaut Courtois to win the FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year award.
