Belgian authorities are urging the public to avoid a construction site in the town of Dendermonde after workers uncovered a massive cache of gold estimated to be worth more than $10 million. The discovery occurred this week while crews were performing renovation work on a property owned by the local charity CAW East-Flanders.
The workers stumbled upon the fortune while digging to install a new sewage pipe. According to a worker identified as Kobe, the crew was shocked by the find, noting that their “first reaction was actually disbelief, amazement.” He added that the team certainly had not expected to encounter such a significant stash of wealth during their routine groundwork.
Local police were immediately notified and arrived to secure the site. Officials later shared images on social media showing approximately 50 gold bars alongside numerous piles of gold coins. Reports from Belgian news outlets indicate the total value of the hoard is roughly nine million euros, or about $10.4 million. The gold has since been moved to a high-security federal government vault for safekeeping.
Following the discovery, the local police department updated their Facebook profile picture to a gold coin and issued a stern warning to those hoping to find more. Noting that several individuals have already expressed interest in visiting the site, officers cautioned that any such attempts would be “truly pointless” and urged the public to respect the fenced-off area. While the legal ownership of the treasure remains undetermined, police expressed hope that the fortune would eventually end up in the right hands.
