At least 39 people have died after a fire broke out in a shop in the southeastern Chinese city of Sinyu. 9 more people were burnt in this incident.
The fire incident took place on Wednesday (January 24) afternoon.
A fire broke out in the basement of a shop on Tiangongnan Avenue, Yushui District, Xinyu City, and quickly spread.
Video footage circulated in the media showed smoke billowing from the building. People are also seen jumping out of windows to save their lives.
President Xi Jinping responded to the fire. He said that all measures will be taken to prevent accidents and ensure public safety. He also ordered an investigation into the incident.
Earlier on Friday, a fire broke out at a school hostel in Yanshanpu village in central China’s Henan province. 13 students died.
Last November, 26 people died in a fire at the offices of a coal company in northern China’s Shaanxi province. Besides, several people were admitted to the hospital. Then last month there was an explosion at a barbecue restaurant in northwest China. 31 people died in that incident.
