British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to arrive in Kyiv on Monday, marking his first international visit since assuming office last month. The trip coincides with Ukraine’s 35th independence anniversary, serving as a platform for the Labour Party leader to reaffirm the United Kingdom’s commitment to supporting the nation against the ongoing Russian invasion.
Ahead of the visit, the Prime Minister’s office announced that Britain has authorized the defense firm MBDA to share classified information regarding UK components for the SCALP long-range missile. This move is intended to facilitate the establishment of local assembly lines within Ukraine. The SCALP is the French-produced variant of the British Storm Shadow, with both systems utilizing shared technology from both nations.
Downing Street stated that this decision will enable French and Ukrainian partners to advance the domestic assembly of the missiles. Furthermore, the initiative aligns with the broader UK effort to rapidly develop cost-effective, advanced long-range strike capabilities for Ukraine under the banner of Project Brakestop. The UK previously became the first nation to provide long-range strike weapons to Ukraine for defensive purposes in 2023.
During his stay in the capital, Burnham will co-chair his inaugural meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, an alliance of countries dedicated to supporting Kyiv. The French presidency confirmed that the summit will utilize a hybrid format, allowing some leaders to attend in person while others, such as Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin, join via video conference.
Reflecting on the significance of the visit, Burnham stated, “On Ukraine’s 35th anniversary of independence, the Ukrainian people should be in no doubt: the UK is behind you today and for as long as it takes.” This trip follows a recent visit to London by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The UK has remained one of Ukraine’s most significant international backers since the full-scale Russian invasion began in 2022. To date, Britain has committed approximately 25 billion pounds, or $34 billion, in total support, which includes 16 billion pounds specifically earmarked for military aid.
The British government is also expanding its technological assistance, having recently shared details on a battle-tested electronic jamming capability known as “Stone Cloak.” These tablet-sized, military-grade jammers are designed to be attached to drones, effectively hindering Russian air defense systems from tracking or targeting the aircraft while in flight.
