The decision to ban the activities of the Awami League in Bangladesh politics has been taken, said Asif Nazrul, the legal advisor to the interim government. He gave this information at a briefing after the meeting of the advisory council at the state guest house Jamuna in Bangladesh on Saturday (May 10) night.
The legal advisor said that three important decisions were made in today’s advisory council meeting. The meeting approved the amendment to the International Crimes Tribunal. According to the amendment, the International Crimes Tribunal will be able to punish any political party and its affiliates or support groups.
He said that in the meeting of the Advisory Council, it has been decided to ban all activities of the Awami League, including cyberspace, under the Anti-Terrorism Act, until the trial of the Awami League and its leaders in the International Crimes Tribunal is completed.
The necessary circular in this regard will be issued on the next working day. In addition, in today’s meeting of the Advisory Council, it has been decided to finalize and publish the July declaration within the next 30 working days.
Earlier, informing about the call for a meeting of the Advisory Council demanding the ban on the activities of the Awami League, the Press Secretary of the Chief Advisor, Shafiqul Alam, said that the government has issued a statement regarding the ban on the Awami League. An emergency meeting of the Advisory Council has been called tonight to discuss the ban on the party.
He said that there is a meeting tonight, where the ordinance proposal of the ICT Act will be discussed. That is why the emergency meeting is being held.
In response to a question, he said that an investigation is underway into who was involved in the incident of former President Abdul Hamid’s departure from the country. Action has been taken against those involved. The rest of the involved will be brought under the law.

Later, on Friday night, Hasnat Abdullah, the chief organizer of the National Citizens Party (NCP) in the southern region, announced a mass gathering program at a press conference from Shahbagh with three demands in mind. He also announced a continuous sit-in program to achieve the demands.
As part of this, leaders and activists of various organizations including Islami Chhatra Shibir, United Peoples Bangladesh (UP Bangladesh), National Citizens Party (NCP), as well as students and the public, began taking a stand at Shahbagh intersection from Saturday afternoon. They were seen raising various slogans while standing firm in achieving the demands until the evening.
