The attack of Hamas on October 7 has prompted Israel to launch a military operation in Gaza. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has blamed Israel and Hamas for the brutal military operation of the Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip.
The 33rd session of the Arab League began in Manama, the capital of Bahrain. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas went to the conference.
Speaking at the conference on Thursday, Mahmoud Abbas said that the attack that Hamas launched on Israel on October 7 based on a single decision actually gave Israel the excuse for this long military operation in Gaza.
He also said, and not only that, that part of the international community supported the Israeli forces’ operation in Gaza. For them, this operation is justified and the basis of this justification is the last October 7 attack by Hamas.
The Palestinian Authority was once in power in the Gaza Strip, but the hardline Islamist armed political group Hamas ousted that government after winning elections in 2006.
The relationship between Fatah and Hamas is bitterly hostile. The main reason is that Fatah believes in continuing the Palestinian independence movement through totalitarian political struggle. Hamas, on the other hand, believes that Palestinian independence can only be achieved through the destruction of Israel through armed means.
About 1,000 fighters of Hamas and its ally, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, launched an ambush on the northern border of Gaza on October 7. On that day, they broke through the border wall and entered the Israeli territory and shot indiscriminately, killing 1,200 people and taking 242 hostages.
In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched a military operation in Gaza that day, which is still ongoing. More than 35,000 Palestinians have already been killed in this campaign. 56 percent of these victims were women and children.
Mahmoud Abbas said that the Palestinian Authority has been under severe financial pressure for the past few months.
Israel and the international community have reduced financial aid to the West Bank since the start of the Israeli military operation in Gaza.
“The people of Palestine need help. Assistance is needed now for the security of the Arab region, the stability of Palestine and the continuation of the Palestinian Authority’s official duties. I request the Arab League to consider the matter.’ Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas gave that message.
