The Cato Institute, a think tank in the United States, has bad news for green card applicants in the country. According to the agency, only 3 percent of applicants will be granted a US green card (residence) this year.
The Washington-based organization recently published a white paper.
A green card is very important for permanent residence and legal employment in the United States. A green card was formerly used for both residence and employment. But currently two separate cards have to be accepted for both functions.
According to the Cato Institute, in 2024, 34.7 million green card applications have been received in the United States. And 18 lakh applications have been received for employment. Of this number of applications, the United States will now grant green cards to 3 percent for legal residence and 8 percent for employment.
The country’s Ministry of Immigration and Emigration has decided to issue green cards to 140,000 immigrants this year.
Note that since 1990, the United States has followed the policy of limiting the rate of green card issuance.
