Iran has claimed ownership of Antarctica. The country’s navy commander, Rear Admiral Shahram Irani, recently said in a interview that the Iranian government owns Antarctica and plans to build military facilities there.
In an interview, this commander of the Iranian Navy said, “We have property rights in the South Pole. We plan to raise our flag there and do military and scientific work.
The interview was given by Shahram Irani at the end of last September. It was also aired on an Iranian television channel.
Since then, it has been strongly discussed in Western politics and media.
In January this year, three US soldiers were killed in a drone attack by Iran-backed armed groups in Jordan. After that, the United States attacked Iran-related targets in Iraq and Syria. In such a situation, this demand of the commander of the Iranian Navy has attracted the attention of the international media.
Meanwhile, the United States recently lifted the order to confiscate 6 billion dollars of Iran’s state-owned bank in Qatar. Many are also thinking about the connection of this decision with the claim of the Antarctic continent of Iran.
Bringing up this topic, Digital wants to know from a spokesperson of the US State Department, whether Iran can spend that money to establish a military base in Antarctica.
In response, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that there is no such opportunity. Iranian funds held in Qatar cannot be used for any purpose in Antarctica. Because this fund will be spent only on humanitarian and public welfare sectors like food, medicine, medical equipment and agricultural products.
