A person has been rescued alive from the landing gear of a flight from Algeria to Paris. However, his condition is critical.
The man was found alive in the ‘under carriage bay’ during a technical check after an Air Algeria flight from Oran, Algeria, landed at Paris Orly Airport on Thursday.
An airport source said, “He was rescued alive after a two-and-a-half-hour flight, but his condition was critical due to hypothermia.” After being rescued, he was taken to a nearby hospital.
The rescued person is believed to be in his twenties. However, as there was no identity card with him, it was not possible to know much.
Commercial airliners fly at altitudes of about 30,000 to 40,000 feet, where temperatures drop to minus 50 degrees. Due to the lack of oxygen and extreme cold in the landing gear compartment, there is almost no chance of survival.
According to data from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), between 1947 and 2021, 132 people attempted to travel into the landing gear compartment of a commercial airliner. The death rate among them is 77 percent.
Earlier in April this year, a man’s body was found in the landing gear of an airplane at Siepol Airport in Amsterdam. The flight first arrived in Amsterdam via Toronto from Nigeria.
