Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially awarded two contracts totaling Dh1.161 billion to develop Al Meydan Street. This strategic infrastructure project is designed to enhance connectivity and improve traffic flow across several key residential and commercial sectors of the emirate.
The initiative will establish a vital supporting corridor that runs parallel to both Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. By providing alternative routes, the project is expected to distribute traffic more efficiently, increasing overall north-south capacity by 18%.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasized that the development serves as a critical link in the city’s road network. He noted that the project is essential for supporting Dubai’s ongoing urban expansion and economic development, serving a combined population of over 500,000 residents across various communities, including Dubai Hills, Nad Al Sheba, Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens, Dubai District One, and Al Barari.
Project Specifications and Infrastructure

The construction is divided into two distinct contracts to accelerate progress while ensuring seamless integration. The first contract focuses on a 14-kilometre stretch of Al Meydan Street between Latifa bint Hamdan Street and Umm Suqeim Street, along with Al Marabea’ Street. This segment features a major interchange at the intersection of Al Marabea’ and Al Meydan streets, utilizing 1,600 metres of bridges with a capacity for 14,400 vehicles per hour. Additionally, a 700-metre elevated link on Dubai-Al Ain Road will be constructed to improve access to Nad Al Sheba.
The second contract covers the section of Al Meydan Street extending from First Al Khail Street through Al Khail Road to Muscat Street. This phase includes converting the Al Meydan-Muscat Street intersection into a multi-level, free-flow interchange featuring 1,400 metres of bridges, also capable of handling 14,400 vehicles per hour.
Expected Traffic Improvements
- Travel Time Reduction: A 66% decrease in journey times between Al Manama Street/Dubai-Al Ain Road and Umm Suqeim Street, dropping from 30 minutes to 10 minutes.
- Strategic Connectivity: Enhanced links between Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Emirates Road, and Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street.
The Al Meydan Street project is being developed in tandem with the 12-kilometre Latifa bint Hamdan Street Development Project, which is also slated for completion by the end of 2028. The latter project, which includes seven bridges and eight tunnels, is projected to accommodate more than 130,000 daily trips, further solidifying the connectivity between major arterial roads across the emirate.
