Israeli military operations in the occupied West Bank have intensified, with forces arresting at least 23 Palestinians and carrying out multiple home demolitions. The United Nations has issued a stark warning that the territory is currently at a “breaking point” due to the ongoing cycle of violence and displacement.
According to the Palestinian Wafa news agency, the recent detainees include two children, one of whom lives with a disability, and a man apprehended while tending to his livestock in the northern Jordan Valley’s al-Hadidiyah. Further arrests occurred in the Jenin governorate, where 11 people were taken into custody, and in the Bethlehem area, where five others were detained.
In the village of Tal, southwest of Nablus, authorities demolished the family home of Farouq Ramadan. Ramadan was one of four Palestinians killed during a July 24 confrontation with Israeli settlers that also resulted in the deaths of two Israelis. Israel frequently employs the practice of demolishing homes belonging to the families of individuals involved in attacks, a policy that human rights organizations have criticized as collective punishment.
Additional demolition activity was reported near Yatta in the Hebron governorate, where the home of Ibrahim Mifleh al-Atimin was destroyed alongside a water well, leaving nine family members displaced. Elsewhere, soldiers dismantled 12 commercial warehouses in Anza and bulldozed an agricultural site in Yarza. In Masafer Yatta, authorities issued notices for the demolition of the Khallat al-Dabaa school and several other structures. UN data indicates that Israel has demolished an average of 122 Palestinian buildings per month throughout 2026.
Tensions remain high as Israeli settlers continue to conduct raids on Palestinian villages. In Al-Mughayyir, a group of settlers attacked residents ploughing their land, injuring six people, including three children and two women. Al Jazeera’s Nour Odeh reported that settlers also burned parts of the valley and targeted nearby homes. According to local accounts, approximately 60 percent of Al-Mughayyir’s land has been confiscated by the military, with settlers establishing at least 11 unauthorized outposts that prevent farmers from accessing their fields.
Further violence was reported in Burqa, where the Palestinian Red Crescent stated that six people, including two children, were wounded during an Israeli raid. Additional settler incursions were documented in the Nablus-area villages of Awarta, Osarin, and Sarra, while a water pipeline was destroyed in Khirbet ar-Ras al-Ahmar.
Addressing the UN Security Council on Tuesday, Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Ramiz Alakbarov highlighted the severity of the situation. He reported that 76 Palestinians, including 18 children, have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers so far this year. Furthermore, approximately 3,800 Palestinians have been displaced due to demolitions, evictions, and settler violence.
The UN has documented over 1,430 settler attacks resulting in property damage or casualties across 260 communities in 2026, often occurring while Israeli forces are present. Since January 2023, 127 Palestinian communities have faced full or partial displacement, with 47 being completely uprooted, impacting more than 6,390 individuals. Alakbarov noted that these attacks are increasingly spreading from Area C into Areas A and B.
Beyond physical displacement, Israeli authorities have advanced or approved approximately 12,360 settlement housing units this year, including 5,160 in occupied East Jerusalem. Describing these events as “interconnected steps, not isolated developments,” Alakbarov warned that these actions are systematically reshaping the West Bank, undermining Palestinian governance, and facilitating what he termed “de facto annexation” ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections in October.
“Some 119 Palestinian communities in the occupied West Bank have been uprooted by this very dynamic in the past three years.
Palestinians are treated as trespassers in their own land, while Israeli settlers slash, burn, and steal the land with impunity,” she added.
