The US President Joe Biden’s proposal to provide a record $10,500 billion in aid to two close allies, Israel and Ukraine, has been blocked by the country’s upper house, the Senate. There was talk of providing military and humanitarian assistance to both countries with this huge amount of money.
The bulk of the aid, $10,000 billion, will be given to Israel, America’s ally in the Middle East. The proposal was defeated by a vote of 49-51 in the 100-member Senate controlled by Democrats. At least 60 votes were required for the proposal to pass the upper house.
Former Democratic leader and presidential candidate Bernie Sanders strongly opposed the proposal. He said it is completely immoral to offer $10 billion in aid to Netanyahu’s hard-right faction to wage an inhumane war in Gaza.
Israel reserves the right to repress armed Hamas. But such an inhuman massacre of innocent Gazans can never be justified.
On October 21 this year, the White House officially sent a request to Congress for this funding. In a speech on the same day, Biden claimed that the security of the United States is related to Ukraine and Israel. US National Security Adviser Jack Sullivan told reporters that this money is very important to strengthen US national security and ensure the safety of Americans.
Israeli forces launched a brutal attack on Gaza last week following the October 7 attack by Hamas. The United States is giving maximum support in this. 16,000 Palestinians have been killed so far in Israeli attacks.
