Russian military strikes have devastated Ukraine’s publishing sector, destroying more than 12 million books as students prepare to return to school. Among the latest incidents, a production facility on the outskirts of Kyiv was hit overnight while working to complete an order for 1.3 million books.
The destruction extends beyond printing plants, with recent attacks also targeting a second-hand book market in Kyiv and obliterating hundreds of stalls. Viktoria Haida, commercial director at the bombed Konvi publishing firm, characterized the campaign as a deliberate effort by the Russian Federation to target the industry.
Haida noted that over the past two months, several major publishing houses have suffered the loss of logistics warehouses that held vast quantities of inventory. These coordinated strikes have significantly disrupted the availability of educational and literary materials across the country. The report also notes that destroying more than 12 million books ahead of the first week back at school, russia has targeted Ukrainian printing presses and publishing houses in recent attacks.
