The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) has officially launched a new phase of its water conservation program, targeting approximately 2,000 homes in the Mughaider suburb. This effort is part of a broader, long-term strategy to promote sustainability across the Emirate of Sharjah, following the successful implementation of the initiative in the Al Rahmaniyah suburb, where 4,000 homes were equipped with water-saving technology.
According to Majid Haremel Al Shamsi, Executive Director of Institutional Support at SEWA, the project is currently underway in Mughaider to finalize the installation of these conservation tools. The initiative aligns with the vision and directives of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. The authority’s ultimate goal is to install more than 750,000 water-saving devices across over 45,000 households in various cities and regions throughout the Emirate.
The program has already demonstrated significant success; to date, more than 14,000 conservation devices have been installed, resulting in a reduction of water consumption by as much as 59%. To ensure the project remains on schedule, Rashid Al Marzouqi, Director of the Media and Communication Department at SEWA, noted that the authority has deployed 12 specialized technical teams equipped with the necessary machinery and tools to carry out the installations efficiently.
SEWA has established a comprehensive eight-point framework to manage the rollout. This includes creating a database of target homes, allocating budgets, setting strict implementation schedules, and assigning tasks to qualified technicians. The process involves direct communication with homeowners to secure approval for inspections, followed by professional installation, post-installation surveys to gauge customer satisfaction, and a final evaluation to measure total water savings.
Beyond direct installation, the authority is actively working to foster a culture of conservation. This includes hosting awareness events, utilizing media campaigns, and providing mobile platforms in shopping centers to educate the public on effective water usage and device maintenance. Al Marzouqi emphasized that these efforts are vital for instilling sustainable habits in the community, noting that water conservation is both a national and religious duty.
The authority is urging all citizens to cooperate with the visiting technical teams when contacted for free home installations. Furthermore, Al Marzouqi encouraged residents to proactively repair any leaks in their home connections to prevent waste. By combining technical intervention with public awareness, SEWA aims to ensure the long-term preservation of the Emirate’s vital water resources.
