Independent pro-Palestinian candidate Adnan Hossein shocks Labor Party candidate Kate Hollern
Blackburn, in the north-west of the UK, has been represented by Labor Party legislators for 69 years. However, the pro-Palestinian independent candidate Adnan Hossein has shown surprise by defeating the Labor Party candidate Kate Hollern in this election.
Adnan, who is new to politics, got 10,518 votes. And the defeated candidate Hollern got 10 thousand 386 votes. That is, Adnan defeated Hollern by 132 votes.
34-year-old Adnan is a lawyer by profession. He stood in the election from a pro-Gaza platform. He was supported by a group of former Labor councillors. These councilors defected over Labour’s Gaza policy. The victory of Adnan, an independent candidate, is seen by many as a reflection of the division and dissatisfaction among many of the party’s voters over the Labor Party’s position on Israel’s war on Gaza.
Meanwhile, despite the Labor candidate losing in Blackburn, pre-election opinion polls and booth polls ultimately proved true. Keir Starmer led the Labor Party to a landslide victory in the UK general election. As of writing on Friday (July 5), the Labor Party had won 411 seats. On the other hand, Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party got 119 seats. The Liberal Democratic Party won 71 seats. Results of 5 seats are yet to be declared.
A party needs 326 seats to get a single majority in the UK. The Labor Party has already secured 411 seats, dethroning the Conservative Party, which has been in power for 14 years. Keir Starmer is the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, Rishi Sunak congratulated Starmer after accepting defeat.
