Now the tram will be running on only two kilometers from Dharmatala to Maidan just to witness the history.
Trams have been running in Calcutta, West Bengal for one and a half hundred years. This transport has become a tradition in Kolkata’s public transport sector. Now the state government has decided to remove the trams from the roads of Kolkata.
West Bengal Transport Minister Snehashis Chakraborty announced this on Monday. However, as a ‘tradition’, trams will be run from Dharmatala to Maidan on a two kilometer route for tourists.
Snehashis Chakraborty said, the last two tram lines were running on Kolkata roads – Dharmatala to Ballyganj and Dharmatala to Shyambazar. Now those lines are being removed. Trams will run as ‘heritage’ only on the short route from Dharmatala to Maidan.
The first horse-drawn tram was run in Calcutta on February 24, 1873. The tram runs from Sealdah to Armenia Ghat. Later ‘Calcutta Tramway Company Limited’ was formed. The company was registered in London. Later in 1902, electric tram was first introduced in Calcutta. Trams operated on several routes.
The 150th anniversary of Kolkata’s traditional trams is celebrated on February 24, 2023. Calcutta Tram Company organizes various programs on the occasion of the day. Eight old trams were refurbished and put on the road.
On that day, it was claimed that Kolkata was the only city in India to have trams. Trams are Kolkata’s pride, glory and heritage. Many tourists from home and abroad come to Kolkata to see the tram. So the tram cannot be stopped. Trams should be kept running to preserve the tradition.
But the state government has taken a policy decision to say goodbye to Trump. As a result, the tram lines spread like a net in the city of Kolkata are going up. Now the tram will be running on only two kilometers from Dharmatala to Maidan just to witness the history.
