The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has officially confirmed that UAE markets are currently free of lettuce products linked to the recent cyclosporiasis outbreak. The ministry stated it is maintaining ongoing coordination with relevant health and regulatory authorities to conduct rigorous inspections of all incoming food shipments.
In a statement posted to the X platform, MOCCAE emphasized its commitment to monitoring international alerts and tracking investigations into potential contamination sources, specifically focusing on fresh produce and lettuce imported from central Mexico. The ministry is collaborating with regulatory bodies to enforce strict safety standards and implement preventative measures across the food supply chain.
Public health officials have advised residents to adhere to safe food handling practices, including washing all fruits and vegetables thoroughly before consumption and purchasing produce exclusively from approved retail outlets. These steps are intended to bolster the national food safety system and protect public health.
The current health concern stems from a widespread cyclosporiasis outbreak across several US states, triggered by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. This parasite, which typically contaminates agricultural products through irrigation or washing water, is not transmitted directly between individuals. Instead, it spreads via contaminated food or water, causing severe digestive issues such as watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, and weight loss, with symptoms often manifesting one week after ingestion.
Recent reports indicate that the US state of Michigan recorded two fatalities linked to the infection. Investigations by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have connected the outbreak, which has affected nine states, to lettuce sourced from Taylor Farms in central Mexico. While this link has been established, authorities continue to investigate potential additional sources of the contamination.
