The United Arab Emirates has formally expressed its solidarity with the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal following a devastating series of flash floods and landslides. In an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) extended its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and the Nepalese government, while offering wishes for a swift recovery for those injured in the disaster.
The catastrophe, which occurred on Wednesday, struck border regions between Nepal and China, triggering widespread destruction that halted travel and buried communities. Current data indicates at least 98 fatalities, with the Prime Minister’s office in Nepal confirming 95 of those deaths. Additionally, China’s state broadcaster CCTV reported that a mudslide in the Tibet region’s Gyirong County resulted in three deaths and left 265 people missing.
The scale of the crisis is extensive, with officials in Nepal reporting 403 individuals missing, 341 of whom are foreign nationals. Sunil Sharma, a spokesperson for the tourism board, detailed that the missing foreigners include 133 Indian pilgrims traveling to the sacred Mount Kailash site, along with 47 citizens from the United States, 34 from Australia, 33 from Britain, and 24 from Canada.
Drone footage and imagery from the affected areas, including the hard-hit Nuwakot district, reveal the severity of the impact. Scenes show buildings submerged in mud, with debris entangled in power lines and trees, and vehicles completely buried. As rescue efforts continue, the disaster highlights the vulnerability of Nepal’s steep valleys, which serve as vital economic and transit corridors but remain highly susceptible to such environmental hazards. The report also notes that workers and others missing after sweeping through communities and bringing travel in some are, massive flash floods in a border area of Nepal and China on Wednesday killed at least 98 people and left hundreds of tourists.
