The leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Fumio Kishida is going to resign from the post of Prime Minister of Japan next September. He has also announced that he will not run again.
Fumio Kishida, 67, has also announced that he will not run in the next election. His tenure as LDP president will end in September. After that he decided to resign as Prime Minister.
In a televised press conference, Kishida said, “I will carry out all duties as prime minister until my term ends in September.”
He said that due to political scandals and failure to control rising inflation in Japan, he will not be re-elected as Prime Minister at the end of this term. He will resign from the post of Prime Minister only after the new leader of the party is elected.
A transparent and free election and free and open debate are important, he said. The first step would be my withdrawal from the LDP. Many in the party were disappointed after Kishida’s announcement. A leader of the party said, this decision is very sad and unfortunate.
Fumio Kishida took office as the Prime Minister of Japan in October 2021. During his three-year rule, he has increased the country’s defense spending, maintaining close ties with the United States on security issues, improving relations with South Korea and handling the coronavirus pandemic. But he has to be criticized due to price increase and political scandals.
During his reign, commodity prices in Japan continued to rise. An opinion poll by Japanese media outlet GG Press last month showed that Kishida’s approval rating had dropped to 15.5 percent. According to analysis of some local media, Kishida decided not to run for election mainly due to massive loss of public support.
