At least 21 people were killed in a collision between a bus and a motorcycle on a highway between Kandahar and Herat provinces in southern Afghanistan.
Another 38 people were injured in the accident on Sunday (March 17) morning.
The accident occurred on the main road between southern Kandahar and western Herat provinces, said Kadratullah, a traffic official in Helmand province. A motorcycle collided with a passenger bus this morning.
Meanwhile, the bus lost control and hit a fuel tanker coming from the opposite side of the road. Investigation is going on in this regard.
A spokesman for Helmand’s police chief said 11 of the 38 injured were in critical condition. They have been taken to hospital. Road accidents in Afghanistan have become a regular occurrence due to the fragile condition of the roads and the recklessness of the drivers.
Mohammad Qasim Riaz, spokesman for the Helmand governor, said the vehicles caught fire due to the clashes.
Pictures posted by the Directorate of Information on social media showed charred, twisted metal and crushed oil tanker cabins lying across the highway. Officials said that cleaning workers are working to remove the debris from the spot.
