The world’s largest airport is being built in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It will be the full version of Al Maktoum International Airport, originally known as Dubai World Center (DWC). The airport is located in a large area about 20 miles southwest of downtown Dubai. This airport, which is environmentally friendly and equipped with the latest technology, will be the largest and busiest airport in the future.
Al Maktoum International Airport opened in June 2010. In October 2013, a Wizz Air A320 flight landed here from Budapest, the first passenger flight. The airport has been designed to be one of the major hubs of the economy in the future.
Once the construction work is completed, more than 16 million passengers will be able to travel through this port every year. This number is 63 million more than the world’s busiest airport Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International and 10 million more than Dubai International. Although Dubai International is the world’s busiest airport outside the United States. At the same time, Al Maktoum will have the facility to carry 1 crore 2 million tons of goods.
Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai International Airport, which oversees the airport, told CNN that Al Maktoum is being expanded to meet the needs of customers. Investment is getting priority in this case. The development of the airport will be phased to maximum capacity. Last year the passenger capacity of the airport was 8.68 million. This year it is 8 crore 82 lakh and next year it will increase to 9 crore 38 lakh.
The airport will be the centerpiece of an entirely new city called ‘Dubai South’, spread across 145 square kilometers of desert just south of Dubai. Al Maktoum International Airport will be fully operational in 2027.
