Algeria’s call for a new ceasefire in Gaza could lead to a UN Security Council vote next Tuesday. However, there are indications that the United States will veto against this decision.
About two weeks ago, Algeria submitted a draft resolution asking for a ceasefire. But Linda Thomas Greenfield, the US ambassador to the UN, said the proposal could derail the process of a “touchy compromise”. Then on Tuesday, Algeria requested to raise this resolution to the Security Council.
At least nine votes are needed for the motion to be passed. The US, UK, France, China and Russia cannot veto. “The United States does not support this draft proposal. If there is a vote on it, it will not be accepted.’ – said Thomas Greenfield in a statement on Saturday.
The United States has already vetoed two UN resolutions since October 7, standing by its ally Israel. But it also abstained twice, leading to UN resolutions in favor of sending humanitarian aid to Gaza and a cease-fire.
On the other hand, talks are ongoing between the United States, Egypt, Israel and Qatar regarding a cease-fire in Gaza and the release of hostages held by Hamas. In this regard, Thomas Greenfield said, “Others should give this process (negotiations) a chance to succeed and not take any action that jeopardizes this process.”
Palestinian independence organization Hamas attacked Israel on October 7. 1 thousand 139 people were killed. The number of injured is 8 thousand 730. This is the account of the Israeli government.
In response to the attack by Hamas, Israel launched a counterattack in Gaza on October 7. Mosques, schools, hospitals, shelters were not spared from their attacks.
The total number of people killed in the Israeli attack in Gaza has reached 28 thousand 858 people. At least 68 thousand 667 people were injured, mostly women and children. More than 1.8 million of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have been displaced.
