The candidates supported by Imran Khan’s party PTI are unable to form the government alone despite winning the most number of seats in Pakistan’s national elections.
Voting took place throughout the day on Thursday. Nawaz Sharif’s PMN-L took initiative to form the alliance before the counting of votes was over yesterday. Nawaz met the leaders of PPP this Saturday morning. But PTI was saying they are going to win single handedly. Imran Khan’s speech on Friday night also singled out victory. But finally on Saturday afternoon, they also said that they are going to discuss the alliance.
PTI Chairman Gahar Khan and top leaders including Asad Qaiser and Ami Muhammad Khan will attend the meeting regarding alliance formation, the party said. The outline of the government formation will be discussed in the meeting with the allies in the formation of the central and provincial governments. However, the PTI chairman said that there is no discussion of any kind of alliance with PML-N and PPP.
On the other hand, PML-N and PPP have agreed to an alliance. Nawaz Sharif held a meeting with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto and Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday morning and invited them to work together. Shahbaz Sharif also met top PPP leaders at Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s residence. Sources said that Nawaz Sharif’s message of working together was highlighted there as well.
According to the latest data of the Election Commission of Pakistan, the results of 250 out of 265 constituencies have been declared. Out of this, independent candidates have won the most 99 seats. After that PMLN won 71 seats, PPP 53 seats and MQM 17 seats. Apart from this, other parties got 10 seats. According to the government results, PTI or any party has to go on the path of alliance to form the government. If the alliance between PML-N and PPP is finalized, it may have to remain as an opposition party without forming the government, that is, Imran’s party PTI may remain elusive.
Polling for 265 seats (one suspended) in Pakistan’s National Assembly was held on Thursday. A party will need 134 seats to form a government. The total number of seats in the National Assembly of Pakistan is 336. Out of this 266 constituencies have direct voting. Apart from this, the remaining 70 seats are reserved. Of these seats, 60 are for women and 10 for minorities.
