Former US soldier Edward Richmond Jr. has been charged again for baton-charging a police officer during riots on Capitol Hill three years ago. Earlier, the US soldier was convicted of shooting and killing a handcuffed civilian in Iraq. He was arrested on Monday.
Edward Richmond, a 40-year-old resident of Geismar, Louisiana, wore a helmet wearing shoulder pads, eye goggles and a Louisiana state flag on his chest. He attacked police in a tunnel outside the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Such information has emerged in the affidavit of the US intelligence agency FBI.
Richmond was arrested in the Baton Rouge area of Louisiana. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. He is charged with civil disorder and assault, resisting police or assault with a dangerous weapon.
In February 2004, this US soldier shot and killed an Iraqi citizen wearing handcuffs in Tal Al Zai, Iraq. He was 20 years old then. A US military court later sentenced him to three years in prison.
Earlier, the former leader of an organization called The Proud Boys was sentenced to 22 years in prison at the beginning of September last year for organizing riots on the US Capitol Hill. It is the longest sentence ever handed down to a mastermind for an attack on an American republic. Last May, the man, Henry Enrique, was charged with conspiracy to commit treason and other charges. Such accusations were made during the American Civil War.
